January 2025

Hello Members!

Happy New Year! We hope 2025 brings more creative energy and coziness in the studio as we begin our 2nd year on Sutter St.!  Some announcements to welcome in 2025!

STUDIO CLEAN-UP/BIG REFRESH

We will be postponing the big studio clean up sometime in the Spring versus this weekend-- thankfully, our studio isn't too dirty! Yay for maintenance-- we appreciate you all who are so thoughtful about this and go above and beyond with clean-up! What we'll ask for you to do AS SOON AS POSSIBLE (from Discord):

  1. 1. tidy your personal shelves and rid of accumulation of dust (if any)

  2. 2. take stock of your clays in the community storage in your column and get rid of excess clay you don't want! we can take them from you if you don't want them and can recycle them

  3. 3. laundry your personal aprons that might be getting a lil too dirty! I will be doing laundry on Saturday AM so if you want a complimentary wash of your personal aprons + towels, please put them in the blue ikea bag bag by the members aprons by Friday night!

  4. 4. take all your pieces from the pick-up shelves to your shelves/home! if you'd like to donate pieces for future fundraisers/studio use, you can put them in the empty crate by the lost and found crate-- please be mindful of how much you donate and the quality of the pieces though! they need to be useful and almost free of flaws.

  5. 5. if you'd really like to help out with some studio tasks, ask Leslie or Jen and see if there are small tasks we can give you! thank you in advance!!!

WORKSHOPS + GLAZES

- GLAZE CHEMISTRY WS - To those who signed up, please complete pending invoices by Jan. 8th! If you change your mind, please let me know so I can get people on the waitlist in-- this will give people to make their test tiles!

- GISELLE HICKS WS - Fully booked even before I launched it to the public! Excited it'll be a member packed workshop! More of these visiting artist workshops to come!

- NIKKI LAU, ARTIST IN RESIDENCE - Hooray! Nikki is coming back and will be working at our studio as our first "Artist in Residence" for a few months! She taught a Foodie Workshop and class last year and it really inspired a lot of members and students! She will be doing an artist talk sometime during her residency.  TBD when! We love Nikki!

- We will have a few new dipping glazes that will be available soon! Will launch details after we test on Discord. =)

STUDIO RULES - REMINDERS

Just want to send a reminder about some big studio no nos and etiquette. Since there are lots of new members, we want to make sure we're on the same page about these boundaries!

- ABSOLUTELY NO OUTSIDE CLAY BOUGHT FROM ANYWHERE ELSE IS ALLOWED AT WHC. Even if you get it from the same place and the same exact clay body that we sell, it is forbidden! Why? Because if something goes wrong (bad batch, recalls, etc.) we can trace the batch it came from, can track clay purchases and prevent any damages to our kilns that might occur. Also, the bags we sell include firing fees that account for electricity and shipping! A MAJOR RED FLAG if ignored and this rule will never change.

- We cannot fire anything that will cause dust to shift around upon loading/handling, i.e. loose clay dust, loose glaze bits. Staff will always protect their lungs/health first and foremost.

- Please make/take phone calls outside of the studio! Phone conversations disturb other people's focus.

- Please take your trash home that you brought in with you that does not fit in the bins provided-- boxes from packaging, other recycling products, etc. We've seen boxes thrown in the studio trash buckets left for us to disassemble and get rid of.  We will no longer throw any cardboard boxes from members as we need all the space in our recycling bin.

- A reminder that we are not a production studio! We can't promise to fire pieces to meet your personal deadlines. We fill the kiln the best we can with pieces from as many members as we can at a time for fairness. If you'd like to fire your own pieces in order to meet your deadlines, you can talk to Alden about renting our semi-private workspaces.

- Before you fire special effects glazes (Ritual Glazes, Wizard Glazes, etc.), please chat with staff first! We cannot fire most of them as they jump off pieces and land on our shelves, or worse, land on neighboring pieces.

- Do not use the Glaze Room door to enter if you know the code. The alarm could go off and we may not be able to disarm it in time!

Don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions! Thank you all for the care and support you show Wheelhouse and we look forward to growing with you!

Best,

WHC Team
